Personal Reflections: Fighting Fraud with AI and Data Science

Yiing Chau Mak (BA '11) is currently a machine learning engineering leader at Stripe, where he leads efforts to use LLMs and deploy AI agents across Stripe’s many products and services. Before Stripe, he was Head of AI and Data at Ario, a Palo Alto-based startup building a next-generation personal AI assistant. Mak has designed many systems at the intersection of cybersecurity, fraud and identity, applying AI/ML and data science techniques in myriad ways. He has held leadership roles at startups such as Shape Security (acquired by F5) and MetaMap (acquired by Incode), and helped many Fortune 500 companies combat fraud and bots. He started his career in the Singapore government, and was part of the founding team at the Cyber Security Agency of Singapore (CSA), where he led the development of Singapore’s inaugural cybersecurity strategy and legislation.
